Biography

Philippe Antoine Vincent Candela was born in Bédarieux, southern France, on October 24, 1973, son of Jacques and Josette.
He has two younger sisters : Sophie, born in 1971 and Marine, born in 1989.

At the age of 5 he began shooting his first kicks at Maurin, his father Jacques acted as coach. He began his career as a striker. At the age of 8 he goes to Montpellier, where he remains until turning 16.

At the age of 10, while at Montpellier, Mr Pepe Hernandes foresees in him other features and places him in the midfield and then as Right fullback.

This is the position with which he's awarded his very first trophy by winning the French Championship U17. At the end of that season, with his contract expiring, he decided to give up with Football.

But his Dad, Jacques, did not give up, since he strongly trusts in Sports and in the qualities of his Vincent. He therefore begins sending Curricula all over France, until when a call comes from Toulouse, where Serge Delams, a former coach at Maurin, is in charge of the youth academies and remembers well Vincent, having trained him previously.

Here life and fate of Vincent Candela have a dramatic change: he plays as a starter, in his first season, with the Reserve Team, and has several opportunities to join the First Team. Then, in the 1992/93 season, comes his first contract as a professional and his first season in Ligue 1.

In his third year at Toulouse, Vincent is placed by Rolland Courbis on the left side, where he will spend most of his career.

His period with Toulouse is marked by his love for Rugby, too. In fact, Vincent used to train - whenever possible - with Stade Toulousain, one of the strongest teams in the world, where he gets to know true friends which are still in touch with him today.

When his contract expires, he is signed by Guingamp, who were just promoted in Ligue 1 and strongly willing to build a big project to grow. In 1996 Vincent Candela succeeds in being the first player, in the history of Guingamp, to join the French National Squad, where he wins a Bronze medal at the European U21 Championships, in Spain.

In January of 1997 he signs for AS Roma, thanks to the efforts of Giorgio Perinetti and Carlos Bianchi. With the "Giallorossi" side he is going to have his best sporting years, winning a League Title (Scudetto) in 2001, together with his close friend Francesco Totti, and soon after also the Italian Super Cup.

With the French Selection he is crowned World Champion in 1998, and then the European Championship against Italy, in the year 2000.

After the Scudetto he suffers a physiological mental decline. The certainties about his career are reduced, and in 2005 he begins to wander, at first with Bolton, then at Udinese, Siena and finally Messina, but he seems to have no more will to go playing football.

He officially retired from football on June 5, 2009, playing at the Olimpico in Rome a farewell game in front of over 40,000 spectators, in which former AS Roma Italy Champions faced the World Champions of France.

We are now at his present days, when the player stops his career and at the age of 40 decides to enter the business world as an entrepreneur.

Wine, Events, Youth Football, Charity: these are the fields in which Vincent Candela is involved, always with great professionalism, commitment and a touch of Humor that is peculiar to him and makes him a brilliant character. And definitely unique.
